Recently, strangulation was elevated from a charge of simple assault to third degree aggravated assault in the state on New Jersey. This is a critical response to the fact that nonfatal strangulation is a leading precursor to domestic homicide, and 68 percent of domestic violence victims will experience near-fatal strangulation by their partners. The earlier we can identify this crime and hold perpetrators accountable, the safer victims will be. In San Diego, home of the Strangulation Prevention Training Institute, law enforcement and medical professionals work hand in hand to gather the evidence needed for prosecution. This course will explore the history and need for strangulation training, how this behavior is a lethality indicator both for the victim and the community as a whole and explore ways medical first responders can partner with law enforcement and advocates to provide the documentation needed to hold perpetrators accountable.
Course Objectives:
Explore the connection between domestic violence strangulation and public safety.
Discuss how appropriate strangulation response can prevent future violent crime.
Outline effective documentation for domestic violence strangulation Identify the role EMT can play in a multi-disciplinary response to domestic violence.
